Activity description

The Kalsa, from the old Arabic "Khalisa" which means pure/elected, can be described as a city within a city. It was built when the Arabs conquered Sicily in the 9th Century A.D as the emir's residence. It was a place full of charm, surrounded by walls and characterized by four gates… In the centuries, after the Arabian domination, the district has witnessed lot of transformations: the fortification walls and the gardens have been eliminated, new roads have been opened and new palaces and churches have been built.

Nevertheless, the Kalsa, with its narrow and winding streets, still preserves a really magical atmosphere. Here, hidden by ancient palaces and buildings, it was built a magnificent church ‘Chiesa dello Spasimo’ which actually has never been used as a church for different reasons… However, Piazza Magione, once the outskirts of the Kalsa cultivated with wheat, was chosen as the right place to build one of the last Norman churches: the church of the S.S. Trinity, nicknamed indeed “The Magione”.

Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Kalsa was the house of Giacomo Serpotta, an artist skilled in working the grout who also decorated churches and other important religious places. So, if you come to visit Palermo you cannot miss one of his finest masterpieces: the Oratory of San Lorenzo.

The tour of this ancient Arab citadel allows you to admire its most significant buildings and, above all, to experience a timeless atmosphere.
